And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.
Matthew 6:28-29
Reduce, Re-wear, Recycle
Rachel Pippin, 20 [Nashville, TN]
Being green is in. Everybody knows the three rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Yet reducing waste isn't enough. Overconsumption, which leads to surplus, is a source of waste, so it makes sense to cut back on consuming-spending, buying, and owning-in order to minimize our ecological footprint.
Reducing consumption may mean being content with a smaller wardrobe. We can re-wear clothese a few times before washing and enjoy the comfort of worn-in, familiar clothing. Swapping outfits and accessories with friends is a great way to reuse clothing and to keep your wardrobe looking fresh and new.
Have new duds, as well as new stuff in general, doesn't lead to true fulfillment. Donning trendy new outfits doesn't shape who we are or influence who we will become. Let's stop sweating the small stuff and focus on the things that truly matter.
The Story Continues: Read Matthew 6:30-34. How do your buying habits reflect the scripture? How will you reduce, re-wear, and recycle as you seek to put God first?
