Youth Leading Worship on May 4

The youth are leading worship on Sunday, May 4, for the 8:15 and 10:30 services. We started worship preparation last Sunday during Sunday school and will continue preparing over the next two Sundays. Each Sunday school class has a particular part of the service they are responsible for shaping. Come and join your friends as we prepare this offering for our worship community.

This year the service we plan and lead will be inspired by ubuntu theology. Ubuntu, “I am because we are,” is an African philosophy that became apart of Western Christianity’s understanding and practice mostly through the teaching and work of Archbishop Tutu. As one who is deeply rooted in the church and struggle, Archbishop Tutu understands and teaches of ubuntu within the context of Scripture. God through Christ as expressed in the Biblical narrative gives life to what has been apart of the spiritual & philosophical life of many South Africans for decades.

Tutu writes, “No real human being can be absolutely self-sufficient. Such a person would be subhuman. We belong therefore in a network of delicate relationships of interdependence. It is marvelous to know that one who has been nurtured in a living, affirming and accepting of others in his or her turn. We do need other people and they help to form us in a profound way.”

Over the next 2 weeks we will ponder ubuntu in the theological context that shapes the lives of those who choose to follow the God of Jesus Christ day in and day out, as we write the greeting, shape the prayers, choose the hymns and offer ourselves in leadership.
