"You Are What You Wear?"
From the red carpet of LA to the streets of Hillsboro Village, so
many of us are paying attention to what people wear. Whether it's a
genuine compliment ("I love your jeans") or a sarcastic critique
("Seems like somebody should be featured on "What Not to Wear"), we
often have something to say about the clothes we wear. We live into
school or work-enforced dress all week and sometimes self or peer-
influenced "dress codes" on the weekends at the Friday night house
party or the Sunday morning altar rail. Whether we like it or not,
our clothes are speaking, and so many of us are listening. This week
at Stepping Outside we'll talk about our clothes, what they say about
us and the way we live, why we have dress codes, and if God really
cares when we take Communion in a miniskirt.
Some things to think about before we gather:
Why do you wear what you choose to wear?
What kind of statement do your clothes make?
What are the dress codes--both enforced and assumed--in your life?
What kind of implicit "dress code" does our church have?
Does it matter how our clothes are made or where they come from?
Are there separate standards for how men dress and how women dress?
