Say YES! Creativity Workshops for Arts in the Village

Saying YES!, is a 4-week (March 22, March 29, April 5, and April 19) UMY series, offering an opportunity for you to choose one of the following art forms to explore: photography, songwriting, jewelry making and art.

Our hope is this series will provide a space for you to discover and nurture your artistic self, saying yes to the creative capabilities within you, all the while growing close to the awesome Creator of all things beautiful.

Invite your friends to share in this great opportunity to learn from professional artists in our community who love and are great at their craft.

You are also encouraged to create art & crafts (record bowls, jewelry, pottery, sculptures, toys for children, etc.) over the next few weeks to display and sale. All money raised will support our 2009 mission opportunities: Heifer Ranch, Southern Africa Mission Pilgrimage and Mexico VIM.

What We're Offering

The Art of Seeing: Photography with Mike DuBose- Come explore "Life in the Village" through the magic of photography.
See our neighborhood through new eyes during a guided photography walk around Hillsboro Village; try your hand at "Alphabet Photography," using close-up views of our surroundings to form letters; or follow your own photographic vision through guided, independent study. Participants will be expected to create finished pieces to contribute to the arts festival sale. Bring your camera, either film or digital, and your creativity. Please contact Mike DuBose if you‚d like to participate and need to borrow a camera.

Village Impressions: Painting/Drawing with Mary Beth Franklin- Capturing, Creating, Expressing, and Sharing a Moment
With sketchpad in hand, the participants of Village Impressions will stroll through Hillsboro Village to Discover a Moment. Participants will sketch and write about what they have decided to capture. Back in the studio at Belmont, participants will capture their moment with acrylic paint on canvas. Mary Beth will give tips about mixing paints, how to paint the background, painting simple objects, and repainting when your brush goes crazy. Participants will create a one sentence thought about their painting. Each completed painting will be photographed for use on note cards. The interpretative reflection will be included in the note card, and participants will prepare the note cards for sale at Arts in the Village.
We'll be making with our hands pieces we can enjoy with our eyes. Whether we are painting, drawing or a little of both, you will spend 3-weeks with a local artist creating something you can offer for Arts in the Village. All experience levels are welcome, come ready to get your hands dirty and paper beautiful.

Music & Lyrics: Songwriting with Amanda Cornett– In this workshop, you will learn to combine music and lyrics to create a song. We will talk about finding a hook that is different and catchy! We will also talk about the structure of songs! Each participant will be able to create a melody and write lyrics alone or collaborate with another person for a co-write. We will talk about "coloring" your lyrics and making each song relate to the listener. Most of all, we will have fun creating a work of art to share with others! :)

NEW WORKSHOP!!!

Handcrafted Fashions: Jewelry making with Ellie Phillips- Unleash the Artist in YOU! Come and join in a time of fellowship and learning a new craft. We will go over some of the tools needed to make your own jewelry and earrings to sale at Arts in the Village. You will also learn how to knit scarves quickly to add to the table. You will also have time and space to make other handcrafted items (knitting, jewelry pieces, crocheting, purses, etc.) Bring any and all jewelry making, knitting and other supplies needed to prepare some pieces. Beads, yarn, wire and clasps will be provided.
